Assessments

Dear Port Washington Parents and Guardians:

Each year, our students in grades K-8 complete a computer-adaptive diagnostic assessment in reading and mathematics. In the past, we have used NWEA/MAP as this required universal screening tool. This year, we will be using the i-Ready assessment tool. The i-Ready diagnostic test allows teachers to address student needs by knowing exactly where they are in their learning journey. It is one of the most widely used tools in the country.

There are three testing windows: the fall, the winter and the spring. The testing is split into short blocks of time over multiple days, taking less time overall from classroom instruction.

The different testing windows are as follows:

These assessments will serve as a diagnostic measure to identify students who may need Response to Intervention (Rtl) progress monitoring services. In addition, the results of the assessments will help teachers determine their students’ needs.

The computer-based assessment will adjust to the appropriate level of your child’s individual learning needs. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed.

Teachers and parents will be provided with detailed, accurate information about your child’s understanding of the learning standards in two areas: reading and mathematics. These assessments will enable us to focus on every child's individual achievement and growth.

Partnering between parents and teachers, and including this longitudinal data, can have a profound positive effect on the lives of our children. Once the administration of the i-Ready assessments is completed, you will receive a report of your child's results/growth. During the interim, please refer to the https://i-readycentral.com/familycenter/ for more information on resources for parents.

Should you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or your building principal.

Warmly,

Sean C. Feeney
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment

NWEA: Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)

Students in grades K through 8 participate in the Measures of Academic Progress Assessment (MAP) by Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). The MAP is a standardized adaptive assessment which measures student achievement in reading and math. The test is administered in the fall and spring each year. Following the administration, MAP reports are generated to identify students' strengths and areas in need of growth. This data is used to monitor student progress and make decisions when planning the most appropriate learning experiences for students. Targeted instruction is provided to support student growth and achievement. Following the administration, parents receive individual student reports indicating progress in the areas of reading and math.
