Dear Port Washington Community,

I’m writing to inform you that this afternoon, a student in Weber Middle School reported to building staff that they had found a swastika symbol written on a student bathroom stall.

The District immediately opened an investigation. Following the completion of that investigation, appropriate disciplinary action, if warranted, will be taken.  It is of great concern to us that one of our students may be responsible for this type of deeply disturbing behavior.  It goes without saying that this behavior is reprehensible and has no place in our community. The District has strict policies and has zero tolerance for such behavior, whether verbal, physical, symbolic, or in any form, that is antisemitic, derogatory, abusive, racist, defamatory or discriminatory.

We condemn this behavior and are committed to taking action to prevent such occurrences from happening in the future. I do want to take this moment to commend the student who did report this matter to their teacher, and Weber’s principal, Ms. Javeline, for her immediate response when informed of this situation. I want to thank every student and staff member who is committed to making Port Washington No Place for Hate and ask every member of our community to help reinforce our efforts.

Sincerely,

hynes
