Addressing Racism, Antisemitism, and Bullying Incident

Port Washington Union Free School District logo

Dear Port Washington Community,

I am writing to inform you of a disturbing incident that recently transpired within our school district. It is with great disappointment and a commitment to transparency that I address the issues of racism, antisemitism, and bullying that recently occurred involving several of our high school students.

Let me express our sincere concern for the well-being and safety of all our students and community members. These incidents are in direct opposition to the values and principles that guide our district's vision, mission, and Portrait of a Graduate we strive to cultivate.

We take these matters very seriously. When the district was made aware of these behaviors, we took immediate action, including contacting local law enforcement. A police investigation was conducted with the full cooperation of the district. While the district cannot comment on individual student disciplinary matters, based on the results of the police investigation as well as the district's internal investigation, those individuals found responsible for this offensive behavior will be disciplined and receive appropriate consequences in accordance with the district’s Code of Conduct.

Racism, antisemitism, and bullying in any form have no place in our schools or in the Port Washington community. We are committed to taking measures to address these issues and prevent such incidents from happening in the future. We believe that education plays a pivotal role in combating hate and promoting tolerance. We will continue to partner with the Holocaust Tolerance and Museum Center as well as other organizations dedicated to promoting tolerance and understanding to provide educational programs and resources to help our students and staff better understand the consequences of hatred and prejudice.

Our district remains dedicated to fostering an environment where diversity and inclusivity are celebrated, and where all members of our community feel safe and valued.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we strive to create a kinder and more compassionate community.

Sincerely,

hynes
