Dear Port Washington Community:

I am sharing information about a verbal threat of violence against Weber Middle School that was made by a Weber student. The information was brought to my attention on Friday, and our local law enforcement agencies were promptly notified and began investigating the threat.

The student who made the threat was immediately identified and parents were contacted by law enforcement. As the investigation is now complete, the police determined that at no time were any students or staff in danger.  While privacy laws prohibit us from discussing specific details of the investigation or discipline of any specific individual, we can assure you that any student found responsible for making a threat of violence faces the most severe consequences possible as allowed by both our Code of Conduct and the law.

We all play a vital role in any school-wide safety effort; it is the duty and responsibility of students, staff, and families to report any potential threats to the proper individuals. Threatening language or behavior in any form is taken very seriously and reported to law enforcement immediately.

Students often report that they were joking when threats of violence are made. Joking about threats of violence are never acceptable and are never a joking matter. Please know that we take these comments and these situations very seriously.  The safety of our students and staff is extremely important to us.

We appreciate the anonymous tip and hope that when anyone—parents or students— hears something of concern, they report it to their building administration in a timely manner.

In partnership,
hynes
