Sousa Elementary Hosts Award-Winning Author Amy McCoy for Autism Awareness Month

Sousa Elementary School welcomed award-winning author Amy B. McCoy as part of its kickoff for Autism Acceptance Month. The visit was made possible through an Ed. Foundation grant, "Embracing Inclusion."

McCoy, renowned for her Little Big Sister book series, writes from the perspective of a sibling of a boy with autism, highlighting themes of self-awareness, social consciousness, and the power of kindness. Through her presentation, she inspired students to deepen their understanding and appreciation of peers with disabilities, while also exploring the writing process and the impact of compassion in schools and communities.

In addition to schoolwide assemblies, McCoy held special Q&A sessions with fifth grade classes, who have been reading her book as a read-aloud. The interactive discussions allowed students to connect with the author and delve deeper into the themes of her work.

The visit was a powerful reminder of the importance of promoting empathy, inclusivity, and understanding in our school community.
