Update: Addressing Antisemitism, Racism and Bullying Incident

Port Washington Union Free School District logo

Good Afternoon,

I am writing to update the community on the recent incident involving antisemitism, racism and bullying referenced in my previous email.

Schreiber High School administration personnel have concluded their internal investigation. In review, yesterday, the district was alerted to disturbing images shared on social media and distributed among a small group of students at Schreiber. Upon further investigation, it was determined antisemitic, racist and threatening language and images were digitally exchanged among this group of students. While this behavior is reprehensible, the Port Washington Police Department's investigation determined there was “no threat to the school or community at large.”

In an effort to ensure the privacy and well-being of the students involved, we are limited in the information we can share. However, be assured the responsible parties are being held accountable for their actions.

We understand the importance of addressing these concerns while helping the community heal and move forward. I’m urging parents and guardians to have a serious conversation with their children on the harm that antisemitism, racism, or intolerance and discrimination of any kind can cause, whether it occurs digitally or in person. We will continue to strengthen our relationship with the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center and other organizations as we foster inclusivity in our schools.

Sincerely,

hynes
