Port Washington School District is proud to announce that Sousa Elementary School has been selected by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence as a 2025-2026 RULER Spotlight School for the third consecutive year. This honor highlights our commitment to fostering a supportive and emotionally intelligent school environment by implementing RULER.
RULER is an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning (SEL) that helps school communities understand the value of emotions, build skills to manage emotions effectively, and create learning environments where educator and student well-being are a priority. As a RULER Spotlight School, Sousa demonstrates excellence in integrating RULER principles into our curriculum, culture, and community engagement.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gaurav Passi underscored the significance of the award. “Sousa’s ongoing recognition as a RULER Spotlight School reflects the strong sense of community, care, and collaboration that defines Port Washington. We are incredibly proud of the dedication of the Sousa team to creating an emotionally intelligent, compassionate school community.”
Principal Meg Sheehan expressed pride in the school's achievement, noting, “This recognition reflects the strength of our Sousa community. Through RULER, our students are learning to lead with empathy, resilience, and kindness every day. The RULER Spotlight School selection process involves a rigorous evaluation by staff at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, including evidence of RULER implementation, impact on school climate, and sustainability of SEL practices. Sousa has excelled in these areas, showcasing innovative practices and significant positive outcomes for students and staff.
As a RULER Spotlight School, Sousa will serve as a model for over 5,000 RULER schools in 27 countries, sharing best practices and strategies for effective SEL implementation. We are excited to continue our journey with RULER and to inspire other schools to prioritize emotional intelligence and well-being.
