Two From Manorhaven Win First Place in Statewide NYSAHPERD Art Contest

Two students from Manorhaven School have won first place for their respective grade levels in the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance annual poster contest.

Fifth-grader Leah Dong and fourth-grader Helen Hu will each receive a $250 prize and the school will receive $500 to be used for the purchase of fitness equipment, thanks to their creative artwork. Each student created a colorful illustration that graphically and textually demonstrated how regular physical activity can lead to health and happiness. The contest recognizes student works in grades three, four and five from throughout New York State, with Leah and Helen grabbing two of the three top honors statewide:

NYSAHPERD is comprised of teachers of health education, physical education, recreation and dance; agency, community, and worksite health professionals; youth coaches; and future professionals who are interested in promoting health, physical education, recreation and dance in the kindergarten through higher education settings throughout New York State.

“Manorhaven continues to go above and beyond expectations in the area of health and wellness education,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Mooney. “They continue to find creative ways to implement this throughout the curriculum to ensure healthy, happy students who are equipped with the knowledge to make smart choices.”

Clockwise, Manorhaven principal Bonni Cohen, physical education teacher Megaera Regan and art teacher Elizabeth Vineis are pictured congratulating Helen and Leah as they display their award-winning posters. Congratulations to both students!
