STATEMENT FROM DR. MICHAEL HYNES

STATEMENT FROM DR. MICHAEL HYNES, SUPERINTENDENT OF PORT WASHINGTON UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT:

It has been brought to my attention that there are rumors circulating in our community related to the impact of increasing coronavirus cases in the region on our schools. While I do not address rumors often, because of the apprehension these rumours have given rise to, I find it necessary to clarify under what the circumstances the district would be considering school closures. To be clear, our district is utilizing the state’s 9% positivity rate threshold for any necessary closure. As County Executive Curran recently indicated, schools have not played a significant role of transmission in Nassau County. However, if new developments arise, our district will adhere to the expertise and any new guidance issued by our local and regional health departments, as well as the CDC. I am confident that the protocols our district currently has in place maintain a healthy and safe environment for our students and staff, but I implore the community to continue the same effort to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus in our community.
