To Our John J. Daly Elementary Families:

Welcome Back and Welcome to Our New Families!

As the slow pace and long days of summer vacation is winding down, I wanted to take a moment to share the excitement that has begun to fill the halls at Daly School. Our hard working and dedicated teachers have been busily getting ready to greet their students on September 5th. Each day the office checks in supplies that your children will eagerly engage with this year. The brightly colored unused books, paper, crayons and markers, are reminiscent of the new beginnings each year represents.

As a young child, and even most recently throughout my doctoral studies, I can recall the anticipation that each new school year presents. You too can remember the cross section of excitement accompanied by some natural trepidation-anxiety. As adults, we know the “butterflies in our stomach” feeling is simply a temporary state that diminishes once comfort and familiarity sets in. While mildly unpleasant, it is all part of new beginnings.

Over the next few weeks, as your child/children begin to prepare for the upcoming school year, I ask that you spend time discussing their personal and academic goals. Keep the two separate! Perhaps have them (or you) write it down. This is certainly nothing to stress over, just meant to show your child that you are part of their educational/emotional journey. As parents, it is our responsibility to not only support our children with their academic endeavors through checking their homework and providing assistance as needed but also to keep a close “pulse” on any emotional struggles they may encounter.

#kindnessrocks exemplifies our school- wide goal for the 2018-19 school year. Here at Daly School we strive to foster and support mentally strong children who treat each other with tolerance, respect, and kindness. We work hard to accept each other for who we are, embrace each other’s strengths and challenges, and learn that while we are all different, we all deserve to be treated with kindness.

Please join me in welcoming our new music teacher, Mr. Ryan Occeña and welcoming back Ms. Susan Burton who will be taking over as our art teacher.

Mr. Occeña is delighted to be joining the Daly Elementary community. Originally from Missouri, he enjoys exploring new cultures and ideas and even spent a year studying music education in Hungary. He taught K-8 music for three years in the Kansas City suburbs and has directed high school choirs in Westhampton Beach and Roslyn. Outside of school, he sings with the eVoco Voice Collective and is a church organist and cantor. He loves the outdoors and spending time with his wife—a professional flutist—and his four-year-old daughter.

Mrs. Burton came to us as a teaching artist and substitute art teacher. She has worked with many grade levels at Daly for the Planting Fields “Drawn to Nature Program,” The New York State of Mind Grant and the 1st Grade animal project. She had a decorative painting business for 20 years and currently does landscape canvas paintings. She was a leave replacement at Schreiber and taught High School Art at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay.

Enjoy the end of summer vacation with friends and family. It’s going to be a fabulous year!

    Warm Regards,
